A custom audience is an ad audience built from your own first-party data, such as a CRM list, website visitors, or app users, that you upload or capture to target known people directly.

What is Custom Audience?
A custom audience is you bringing your own data to a platform. Instead of relying on the platform's interest categories, you supply the people: a CRM export of customers, a list of email subscribers, visitors captured by your pixel, or users tracked by your app SDK. The platform matches that data against its user base and builds a targetable audience from the people it can identify. This makes custom audiences foundational. They power direct targeting of known segments, suppression (excluding existing customers from acquisition), and seeding for lookalikes. As third-party signal erodes, first-party custom audiences have become more valuable, not less. The variables that matter are match rate and privacy handling. How much of your list a platform can match depends on data quality and the platform's matching logic, and how that data is hashed, processed, and retained differs by platform and jurisdiction.
How Custom Audience differs across ad platforms
Meta
Meta calls them Custom Audiences, built from customer lists (hashed and matched), website pixel traffic, app activity, or engagement. They're also the standard source for building Meta Lookalike Audiences. Match rates vary with list quality and the identifiers you provide.
Google's first-party-list equivalent is Customer Match, where you upload hashed customer data (email, phone, address) to target across Search, YouTube, Gmail, and Display. Match rates and eligibility have policy requirements, and Google handles the hashing/matching on its side.
TikTok
TikTok offers Custom Audiences from customer file uploads, engagement, app activity, and website traffic. As with the others, the list is hashed for matching, and achievable match rates depend on data quality and overlap with TikTok's user base.
Common Custom Audience misconceptions
Custom audiences and lookalike audiences are the same thing.
A custom audience is built from people you already know (your first-party data). A lookalike audience uses that custom audience as a seed to find new, similar people you don't know. One is your existing data; the other is modeled expansion off it.
If I upload 100,000 contacts, I'll reach 100,000 people.
Match rates are never 100%. The platform can only target contacts it can match to a real user account, and that depends on data quality, identifier overlap, and the platform's matching logic. Real match rates are typically well below the full list size.
